Is Ducati Monster 797 a Good Beginner Bike?

May. 26 2021 Motorcycles By Erico Motorsports

With so many options and things to consider, purchasing your first motorcycle can be an overwhelming and exciting experience. Get clear on your intended use for your bike, do some research, ask lots of questions, be realistic on your budget and take into consideration some of our tips below and you should be good to ride!

Considerations for Your First Bike

The heavier the bike, the harder they fall; making a mistake on a heavy bike can be magnified into a larger and potentially dangerous issue, so choose what you can comfortably handle. A lighter weight bike is recommended for beginners because they’re easier to balance and maneuver on and off the road while you’re still getting the hang of things.

Use and power are important and should be considered together. Longer drives require a more powerful engine but if the majority of your riding is heavy traffic urban commutes then high power isn't needed. As a newbie a good general engine size is around 500 or 600cc, but you need to understand what that means- for example a 600cc adventure bike may have half the power of a 600cc sports bike, the engine size is the same, but the way the engine has been tuned makes it a completely different type of engine.

Different styles of bikes have different riding positions and degrees of comfort. As a beginner comfort and correct fit are important. More and more bikes are offering different seat height options, too. Look for high quality brakes and ABS; as a novice rider you may panic and hit the brakes too hard, ABS will stop the brakes and tires from locking up if you apply the brakes too forcefully, preventing your bike from skidding making it a priority safety feature.
